VilleIntroduce yourself

My name is Ville and I am a security researcher and engineer, specialized in hardware and embedded software security. I received my M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Tohoku University in Japan, where I studied cryptography and security at the Research Institute of Electrical Communication. Before joining Secure-IC, I worked as an Associate Professor at Tohoku University doing security research.

What are the missions of your team at Secure-IC?

I work in one of our 3 Business Lines called Service & Certify. Our work is to develop new technologies and use cutting-edge scientific advances to address security issues. Our team is driven by the ambition to set the major security standards of tomorrow. We are also led to work hand-in-hand with customers when they need an expert eye for the analysis of their products security.

What is the most challenging project you took part in?

The most challenging project I had the opportunity to work on was the production of a static/dynamic analysis tool to improve the security of source code for certain types of embedded platforms. This type of tool is a very specialized and unusual software. Generating such a tool requires a deep dive into embedded platforms, operating systems, compilers and their security. Being part of this innovative project was a very rich and rewarding experience for me.

What’s next for you at Secure-IC?

My main goal is to deepen my understanding and experience with real-world applications of security research. I also hope to publish the results of my security research in specialized conference. Eventually, I would like to improve my awareness of the organizational security culture of companies by educating myself on various topics such as information security risk assessment strategies, etc.

What is your best memory since you joined Secure-IC?

Being in the Tokyo Office during those particular times of COVID-19 did not make it easy to bond with my colleagues from all over the world. Still, I am sure there are many good memories to come with my team into which I fit as well as I could, given the circumstances. Either way, I look forward to meeting them all in person!
