ABSTRACT: Side-channel analysis is a prevalent technique to attack embedded systems.
Historically, it has encountered several realms, namely that of “attacks”, “distinguishers”, “detection”, and “prediction”.
Those techniques have gradually shifted the focus from exploitation to security assessment.
However, there is still a need to quantify the security level of an embedded system, in a way that is agnostic with respect to the attack method.
Recently, the community has leveraged information theoretic tools to give lower bounds on the effort for an attacker to succeed in extracting information.
In this keynote, I’ll unveil recent spectacular progress in this respect: the success rate to break a key can be derived even for high-order masking schemes.
As a byproduct, these results allow for a reasonable selection of the adequate masking order when implementing a countermeasure.
